I don’t know about you, but Watermelon is one of my favorite fruits. Nothing says “summer” like a juicy piece of fresh watermelon. There are many reasons to love this fruit. First off, it is very low in calories (one cup of watermelon is only 46 calories!). Second of all, this fruit is incredibly hydrating.

In addition to making a great snack, why not try a watermelon mask on your face to help prevent wrinkles. Here’s what you’ll need:

Watermelon

Avocado

Vaseline

Blender

Bowl

Directions:

Clean the watermelon and chop it into small cubes. Keep blending it until it’s smooth enough to pass it through a sieve.

Peel the avocado and dispose of the pit. Scrape out the avocado and blend it with the watermelon.

Add about two tablespoons of Vaseline and continue blending until the mixture is a smooth paste.

Put the mixture in a bowl and allow it to set in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. The cool watermelon will soothe the skin while the fats in the avocado will reduce the appearance of fine lines.

Did you know that hot water freezes faster than cold water?

Yep, it’s true. Want to try it at home?

Fill one container with hot water and the other one with cold water, and put them in the freezer. Which one freezes first? The hot one.

Although this phenomenon just doesn’t seem to make sense, it’s not magic. Scientists aren’t entirely certain why this occurs but they offer a few possible explanations: differences in supercooling, evaporation, frost formation, convection, and effects of dissolved gasses between the hot and cold water.

So go ahead, we dare you, try this at home!

When we discovered this use for plastic water bottles wit definitely caught our interest! It’s a cheap and efficient way to trap domestic flys or fruit flys and makes great use of plastic water bottles. This trap works by luring the flys to enjoy free meal. They become trapped and eventually die. Fair warning: The stink can become quite strong so don’t keep this fly trap near your home or the dog’s kennel.

Materials:

Large water bottle (1.5 to 2 liter plastic bottles work best)

Scissors (or some sharp object to cut through a plastic bottle

Bait – A small chunk of meat chopped into water or a small amount of doggy poo with some water. (Hey, we didn’t say it was pleasant but it will certainly do the job!)

Wire

Here’s how:

Cut the plastic bottle about 1/3rd of the way down.

Invert the top 1/3rd section of the cut bottle and place in the bottom 2/3rds.

Insert the bait in the bottom section.

Tape or glue the bottle together.

Fashion some wire in to a ‘U’ shape with some right angled ends that turn in towards the bottle. Cut a small hole to attach the wire.

Looking for a decorative way to cool adult beverages down? Check out this use of plastic bottles:

So classy looking, and so darn easy.

Materials:

A 3-liter empty bottle

Your bottle of adult beverage (might we recommend Vodka)

Distilled water (it will have more clarity)

Fruit – lemons, limes, star fruit, or cranberries

Duct tape to ensure your bottle won’t float up in the water

Here’s how:

Cut the top of the 3-liter empty bottle.

Place the adult beverage bottle inside the 3-liter container and fill with an inch or two of water. Freeze this until solid.

After the base is frozen, add a layer of fruit slices or berries and fill with more water being sure to cover the fruit with water. Again, freeze until solid.

Fill the next layer in the same manner. This layer should reach the top of the adult beverage bottle.

After the cooler completely frozen, remove it from the freezer so it can thaw just a bit to be able to get the 3-liter bottle off the ice. It can take about 30 minutes and if this is not enough, you can dip it in luke warm water.

Return the cooler to the freezer until you are ready to use it!

And viola!, everyone will admire your gorgeous cooler!

We covered it briefly in our series on ways to conserve water, so don’t forget you can make a toilet tank filler out of an old water bottle. Doing this can save you 10 gallons-yes TEN gallons!- of water a day.

And it’s so simple to create:

Put a couple inches of sand or very small rocks in the bottle. Fill the bottle with water the rest of the way and place it in your toilet tank. Viola!
