Let’s Make an Upside Down Planter!

Take those empty two-liter bottles and turn them into a DIY upside down planter to enjoy fresh fruits and veggies year round (or just lovely foliage too!). With a little bit of time, energy, and space you’ll be a great farmer in no time! Might we suggest tomatoes?

What you’ll need:

  • Empty 2-liter bottle
  • Eye bolt with washer
  • Duct tape, contact paper, or spray paint
  • Drill

Time to create!

Step 1 – Creating an access hole

Make a 2-inch hole on the side of bottle. This hole will let you add soil more easily and also is where you will water your plant.

Step 2 – Add the hanger

As 2-liter bottles are quite thick on the center of the bottom of the bottle, this place provides a great place to hang it by. Using a drill about the same diameter as the eye bolt, drill a hole in the center of the bottom of the bottle.  Now thread the bolt right into the bottle.

Step 3 – Covering your planter

If roots are exposed to light for too long, they can become damaged so it is very important to cover your planter. Get decorative, or there is nothing wrong with some good ‘ole fashioned duct tape. Wrap the entire bottle including the access hole. Cut an “x” through the access hole to allow access once again.

Thanks “Cheap Vegetable Gardener“.

Juice Anyone?

Real, 100% juice is certainly good for you. Why not enjoy your own fresh juice at home on a new juicer? (And no, we don’t mean run out and purchase a new juicer). As we continue our blog series on cool things you can do with plastic water bottles, discover that a juicer can easily be created from a plastic water bottle. So give that bottle a whole new life and enjoy your own freshly juiced delights at home. Mmm, nothing beats freshly squeezed orange juice, right?!

The juicer pictured above was created from a Poland Spring water bottle. Simply cut off the top of the water bottle. Be sure to leave enough of the bottle though to collect juice. Enjoy!

Cool Things To Do With Plastic Water Bottles

For March, this water blog will do a series on cool things you can do with plastic water bottles.  Shame on you if you are using plastic water bottles, so opposed to “trashing” those plastic water bottles, we propose  some pretty nifty ways to give those water bottles new life!

Water Bottle Chandelier

Alright, DIY-ers here is how you can make your own water bottle chandelier:

Materials

  • Icicle style Christmas lights (about 100 lights should be good)
  • White zip ties
  • 2 ceiling hooks
  • 10 plastic water bottles
  • an X-acto knife

Directions:

1. Using the X-acto knife, cut the bottom 1/3 off the bottles.

2. The water bottle lids will not be used so recycle them.

3. Thread 2 icicle light strands through the tops of each bottle.

4. Fasten all the strands together with azip tie. Using another zip tie, create an additional loop through the first zip tie. Now you can to hang your cool new chandelier from the ceiling hook.

5. Viola!

Please be advised that your chandelier should never be left unattended as the plastic bottles could potentially melt. So be careful!

Here are some other rad chandeliers so get creative!

Reverse Osmosis Simplified

What is reverse osmosis and how does it work?

Reverse osmosis is a process to purify water. Typically it involves multiple steps including:

  • One or multiple sediment filters to capture particles in the water.
  • An activated carbon filter to trap organic chemicals including chlorine.
  • A thin film composite membrane (this is the reverse osmosis filter)
  • Another carbon filter might be used to trap chemicals not removed by the RO membrane.
  • An ultra-violet lamp to kill any lingering microbes.

More Water Saving Tips for Your Lawn and Garden

Here’s 5 more tips:

21)   Water during the early morning and don’t water when it’s windy.

When you water earlier in the day, it reduces water evaporation. It’s also the best defense again those pesky garden creatures.

22)   Use efficient watering systems for shrubs, flower beds and lawns.
You can greatly reduce the amount of water used for shrubs, beds and lawns by strategically placing soaker hoses, installing a rain barrel water catchment system, or using a drip-irrigation system. When watering by hand, use a variable spray nozzle to ensure more targeted watering.

23)   Don’t use running water to wash your car
Turn off the hose when cleaning your car—use a soapy pail of water instead. Use the hose for rinsing only. By avoiding watering down the car initially it can save 150 gallons of water! To conserve even more water use a waterless car washing system.

24)   Don’t use a hose to clean driveways and sidewalks—use a broom!

25)   Check for leaks in pipes, hoses, faucets and couplings.
Even though an outside leak may be seemingly out of sight, it shouldn’t be out of mind. Outside leaks are just as bad as inside leaks.
